AI Assistant Pricing in 2026: What ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude Cost

Here is the short version. In August 2026 you can get a genuinely useful AI assistant for nothing. A good paid one starts at five dollars a month. The top tier costs two hundred. And a lot of people are paying for something their phone already gives them for free.

Prices move fast in this category. Google cut one of its plans by nearly forty percent in June. OpenAI added a whole new tier in April. So every number below was checked against the company’s own page on 4 August 2026, and where a company does not publish a price, I have said so rather than guessing.

What does ChatGPT cost in 2026?

ChatGPT now runs six consumer and business tiers, from free to $200 a month. Free gets you limited access to GPT-5.5 Instant with caps on messages, uploads, image generation and memory. Go costs $8 a month and lifts most of those caps by roughly ten times. Plus costs $20 and adds the advanced reasoning models, projects and scheduled tasks. Pro comes in two flavours now, $100 and $200, and the only real difference between them is how much you can use.

The Pro split is new. Until April 2026 there was one Pro plan at $200. OpenAI added the $100 option for people who wanted more than Plus but did not need twenty times the usage. In OpenAI’s own words on its Pro tiers help page, “both Pro tiers include the same core capabilities. The main difference is usage allowance.”

On the business side, ChatGPT Business is $20 per user per month on annual billing, or $25 month to month, with a two-user minimum. Enterprise is custom priced. ChatGPT Edu, the university plan, has no published price at all. Wait, does ChatGPT have ads now?

Yes, on the free and Go tiers. OpenAI announced advertising in January 2026 and it now shows to logged-in adult users in the United States. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free.

There is a trade you should know about. Free and Go users can turn ads off, but doing so cuts the number of messages you get each day. So the real choice on the cheap tiers is not “ads or no ads”. It is “ads, or fewer messages”.

If ads bother you and you use ChatGPT most days, that pushes you past Go and straight to Plus at $20. If you only use it occasionally, the ads are a fair price for free access. OpenAI set out its reasoning in its post on advertising and expanding access.

What does Google Gemini cost in 2026?

Gemini is free to use, and the paid plans start at $4.99 a month. That $4.99 tier is called Google AI Plus, and it is the best value in this entire comparison right now.

Google does not sell the AI separately from cloud storage. The AI plans are Google One plans, so you are buying both together whether you want both or not. Google AI Plus gives you double the usage limits, a 128,000 token context window, video generation, and 400 GB of storage. Google AI Pro is $19.99 and jumps the context window to a million tokens, quadruples the limits, adds 5 TB and throws in YouTube Premium Lite. Ultra sits above that.

Two things changed recently and both are in your favour. In June 2026 Google dropped AI Plus from $7.99 to $4.99 and doubled its storage from 200 GB to 400 GB. And in May 2026 it cut the top Ultra plan from $250 to $200 and introduced a cheaper $99.99 Ultra. Why are there two plans called Google AI Ultra?

Because Google sells a $99.99 Ultra and a $199.99 Ultra, and the names are identical. The difference is usage. The cheaper one gives you five times the limits of AI Pro. The expensive one gives you twenty times.

This confused enough people that Google changed its upgrade screens in May 2026 to spell out the usage allowance next to the storage. If you are shopping, look at the usage multiplier, not the plan name.

The free tier is worth understanding too. Google publishes its limits properly, which most companies do not. Free gets you a 32,000 token context window. AI Plus gets 128,000. AI Pro and Ultra both get a million. Every tier, free included, can reach Gemini Flash-Lite, Gemini Flash, Gemini 3 Pro and Deep Research. Video generation is the main thing locked behind payment. What does Claude cost in 2026?

Claude is free to start, $20 a month for Pro, and $100 or $200 for the two Max tiers. Anthropic has not changed these prices in 2026.

Anthropic describes its tiers in multiples rather than message counts. Pro gives you “at least five times the usage per session” compared with free. Max 5x gives five times Pro. Max 20x gives twenty times Pro. Annual billing on Pro works out at $200 paid up front.

The company is unusually blunt about why it will not publish message limits. The number of messages you get depends on how long they are and which model you use, so a single figure would be misleading. Limits reset on a rolling five-hour window with a separate weekly cap. Is Samsung Galaxy AI still free?

Yes. Galaxy AI’s basic features are still free on supported Galaxy phones in August 2026, with no subscription of any kind.

This one matters because a lot of people believe otherwise. Back in 2024 Samsung said Galaxy AI would be free “until the end of 2025”, and that line got repeated everywhere. It has since been removed from Samsung’s own support pages. The current wording, which appears across several samsung.com pages including one updated in May 2026, reads: “Galaxy AI basic features provided by Samsung are free. Any Samsung enhanced AI features and all third party AI features are subject to different terms and may be subject to fees.”

Read that carefully, because there are two doors left open. Samsung reserves the right to charge for future “enhanced” features. And any Galaxy AI feature that is actually powered by someone else, mainly Google, runs on that company’s terms rather than Samsung’s. So the free stuff you have today is free. Nobody has promised it will cover everything Samsung ships next year.

Is Apple Intelligence free?

Yes, and there is no paid Apple Intelligence tier at all. It comes with iOS, iPadOS and macOS on hardware that supports it, at no extra cost.

The limit is your device, not your wallet. You need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, an iPad or Mac with an M1 chip or better, or an Apple Vision Pro with M2 or better. Older hardware simply does not get the features. Apple lays out the requirements on its Apple Intelligence page.

One clarification, because people get this wrong: Apple One does not include Apple Intelligence. Apple One bundles iCloud+, Apple TV, Apple Music, Arcade, Fitness+ and News+ at $19.95, $27.95 or $39.95 a month depending on tier. Tim Cook has hinted that very heavy AI use might one day cost extra through iCloud+, but Apple has announced no plan, no price and no date. Treat anything you read about paid Apple Intelligence arriving on a specific month as speculation.

Which one should you actually pay for?

For most people the answer is either nothing or $4.99. Everything above that is for people who hit limits regularly, and most users never do.

Here is the rough decision, by who you are.

You have a recent Galaxy or a recent iPhone and you mostly want help with writing, photos and calls. Pay nothing. Galaxy AI and Apple Intelligence already cover this, and they are built into the phone rather than sitting in a separate app.

You use an AI assistant a few times a week for everyday questions and drafting. Google AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest serious upgrade on the market, and the 400 GB of storage alone is close to what you would pay Google for storage by itself.

You use it daily for real work and you want long documents. Google AI Pro at $19.99 or ChatGPT Plus at $20 or Claude Pro at $20. These three are priced identically on purpose. Pick on quality for your kind of work, not on price, because there is nothing to choose between them financially.

You are writing or coding for hours every day and you keep hitting limits. This is the only case where $100 or $200 makes sense. If you are not actually hitting caps on a $20 plan, you will not notice the difference.

You run a small team. ChatGPT Business at $20 per user per year-billed month, with a two-user minimum, keeps your data out of training. That is usually the reason to move up, not the usage.

What about the bundles?

Two of the three big bundles include AI, and one does not. This trips people up when they are comparing total cost rather than plan price.

Google One and the Gemini plans are the same product. You cannot buy Google’s AI without buying storage, and you cannot buy the storage tiers without the AI. If you already pay Google for storage, look at what upgrading actually costs you, because the gap is often small.

Microsoft 365 includes Copilot: Personal is $9.99 a month, Family is $12.99, Premium is $19.99. There is a catch on Family that Microsoft prints on its own comparison page. The AI features go to the subscription owner only and cannot be shared. So on a plan covering six people, one person gets Copilot.

Apple One, as covered above, has no AI component at all.

Is ChatGPT Go available in my country? Almost certainly. It launched in India only in August 2025, then rolled out to 170 more countries in January 2026. OpenAI’s position now is that Go is available everywhere ChatGPT is.
