About AirPods
AirPods is Apple's own range of wireless earbuds and headphones, and the thing that holds it together is not the sound. It is the setup. Open the case next to an iPhone and the buds are ready, then they follow you across iPad, Mac and Apple TV without being paired again. As shown on Apple's own AirPods page, the current line runs from an open-fit bud with no noise cancellation, through the same bud with Active Noise Cancellation added, to a sealed in-ear Pro model carrying hearing-health features, and finally one over-ear pair. Four choices, three shapes, one question that decides most of it: do you want a seal in your ear or not?
What the AirPods range actually covers
Apple lists four models. AirPods 4 is the open-fit bud, rated at up to 5 hours of listening, charged over USB-C. AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation is the same bud with ANC, Adaptive Audio and Transparency added, rated up to 5 hours, or 4 hours with cancellation running, and its case charges wirelessly as well as over USB-C. AirPods Pro 3 is the sealed in-ear model, rated up to 8 hours with ANC and up to 10 hours in Transparency with Hearing Aid, in a MagSafe case. AirPods Max 2 is the over-ear pair, rated up to 20 hours, and it is the only model Apple lists for lossless audio over its USB-C connection. That is the whole range. There is no open-back model, no wired-only model and no professional studio model in it.
Open fit or sealed fit, and why it decides the rest
The AirPods 4 shells rest against the ear without closing it. The Pro 3 use silicone tips in five sizes to seal the canal. The Gadgeteer put the trade-off well in its June 2026 comparison: the question is whether you want the music to float around your ears or shut the door behind it. An open fit is easier to wear for hours and lets you hear the room, which suits a desk, a house and a quiet office. It also caps how much noise any amount of processing can remove, because the sound has an unobstructed path in. If your listening happens on trains, planes or a gym floor, the seal is doing more work than the electronics.
Where AirPods Pro 3 earns the extra money
Three things, and none of them is sound quality alone. Battery, first: the same reviewer measured roughly 8 hours a charge against roughly 4 for the ANC version of AirPods 4, which matters on a long flight rather than a commute. Cancellation, second: Apple's claim on its own page is up to 4x more Active Noise Cancellation than the original AirPods Pro. Hearing features, third, and this is the one people underrate. The Pro 3 is the only model in the range with a Hearing Test, a Hearing Aid feature and Hearing Protection, plus heart rate sensing during workouts. If you want any of those, the rest of the range cannot be talked into providing them.
The case for and against AirPods Max 2
Stuff rates it the best-sounding thing Apple sells here and near class-leading for cancellation, then spends most of its verdict on the compromises. Twenty hours is short for over-ear at this price when Sony offers thirty. The included case draws real criticism. The headphones cannot be manually powered off. Lossless runs over the USB-C cable rather than wirelessly. Buy it if you are already inside Apple's ecosystem, want over-ear comfort and will use the wired lossless path. If you mostly want the longest battery and the best travel case, look outside Apple first.
Who should buy something else
Android owners, mainly. The instant pairing, the handoff between devices and several of the hearing and translation features are built around Apple hardware, and Stuff flags the missing Android features as a real limitation on the Pro 3. Anyone who needs a low-latency wireless dongle for gaming or a detachable boom mic is also shopping in the wrong aisle. And if budget is the whole story, Stuff makes the point that older Pro stock often sells for close to the price of AirPods 4 with ANC, which is worth checking before paying current list price for the newer bud.
How to choose in one pass
Work from your ears and your rooms, not the model numbers. Commuters, gym users and people on calls all day are the Pro 3 audience. People at a home desk who want to stay aware of the room want AirPods 4 with ANC. First-time buyers on the tightest budget can take AirPods 4 without cancellation and accept that the trade is a real one, not a marketing distinction. Anyone chasing sound quality above all, who is happy to plug in for lossless, is looking at AirPods Max 2.
