Apple has announced no AirPods Pro 4. It has not confirmed a name, a date, or a single feature, and the reports about cameras in the earbuds and a new chip come from analysts rather than from Apple. Apple sells four sets of AirPods. AirPods 4 is the open fit pair with no noise cancellation. AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation is the same open shape with cancellation added. AirPods Pro 3 is the sealed, silicone tipped pair at the top of the in-ear range. AirPods Max 2 is the over-ear pair and a separate proposition entirely. Who the line is actually for

Three groups, and it is worth checking which one you are in. People who commute or fly regularly, where the seal and the cancellation do work an open fit pair cannot. There is no high resolution codec support, which matters to a small group and to nobody else. Who should buy something else

Anyone who dislikes the feeling of a sealed ear tip should buy AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and accept weaker isolation, because a pair that is uncomfortable gets left in a drawer. Anyone who wants the longest run time between charges should look at the cheaper pair for the same reason. Anyone who wants the best sound available at this money, rather than the best integration with an iPhone, should shop outside Apple and judge on reviews. Anyone carrying an Android phone loses most of what the price buys. And anyone waiting specifically for a fourth generation has nothing announced to wait for, so the practical choice today is the model on sale or none at all.

When a successor might arrive

Apple has published nothing. The line has kept a roughly three year rhythm so far, with the first pair in October 2019, the second in September 2022 and the third in September 2025. On that record alone a successor would still be some way off. Reports during 2026 disagree with that reading, describing camera equipped AirPods with an H3 chip arriving as soon as 2026, or in late 2027 alongside an anniversary iPhone, or with development suspended, depending on which report is being read.
