About AirPods 5
Apple has not announced AirPods 5. No name, no price, no date, no product page, nothing from Apple itself. We reopened Apple's own newsroom on 12 August 2026 to check, and the newest press release filed under AirPods is AirPods Max 2 from 16 March 2026. The standard AirPods line has not been touched since AirPods 4.
So this page does not tell you what AirPods 5 will do, because nobody outside Apple knows. What it does instead is show you where the line stands today, how often Apple has actually refreshed it, and what to buy if you need earbuds now rather than at some unnamed point in the future.
Has Apple announced AirPods 5?
No. Not a word.
We checked Apple's newsroom AirPods archive on 12 August 2026. Here is the recent run, newest first: AirPods Max 2 in March 2026, the AirPods Pro 3 launch in September 2025, a software update in June 2025, a lossless audio update for AirPods Max in March 2025, and then back to the AirPods 4 announcement in September 2024.
There is no AirPods 5 entry anywhere in that list.
You will find plenty of articles talking about a new H-series chip, health sensors, or a redesign. Those trace back to analysts, supply chain reports and leakers. None of them is Apple. A leak is not an announcement, and we are not going to print one as though it were.
What is on sale in the standard AirPods line right now
AirPods 4. That is the current generation, and it has been since 2024.
Apple announced it on 9 September 2024 and put it on sale on 20 September. There are two versions, a plain one and one with Active Noise Cancellation. Both use the same open-ear shape, so neither seals into your ear canal the way the Pro models do.
That distinction matters more than the generation number. If you have tried AirPods before and they fell out or sounded thin, the open fit is usually why, and a fifth generation would not necessarily fix it.
How often does Apple actually update the standard AirPods?
Less often than people assume, and never on a fixed schedule.
The first AirPods arrived in 2016. The second in 2019. The third in 2021. The fourth in 2024. That is a gap of three years, then two, then three.
Average those out and you land somewhere around two and a half years, which as of August 2026 puts the line in the range where a refresh would not be surprising. It would also not be surprising if nothing happened for another year. Apple has gone quiet for longer.
A cadence tells you a refresh is coming eventually. It does not tell you when, and anyone converting it into a month is doing arithmetic, not reporting.
Why there is no release date on this page
Because we would be making it up.
Rumour pages age badly and they age quietly. The predicted date passes, the product does not arrive, and the page carries on ranking and carries on telling people something that is no longer true. Nobody goes back and fixes it.
So the rule here is simple. Until Apple publishes something itself, this page says what is missing and when we last looked. Right now that is 12 August 2026. If you are reading this a long way past that date, treat everything on it as needing a recheck.
The rest of the AirPods range has moved on
If you want the newest thing Apple has made in audio, it is not in the standard line.
AirPods Pro 3 landed in September 2025. AirPods Max 2 followed in March 2026. Both are more recent than AirPods 4, and both sit above it in price.
Worth knowing if your reason for waiting on AirPods 5 is simply that you want current hardware. You can have that today. Just not at the entry-level price.
Who should buy something else
Most people reading this, honestly.
If you need earbuds now, buy AirPods 4 and stop waiting. There is no announced product to wait for, and a fifth generation could be a year away or more.
If the open fit has not worked for you before, skip the standard line and look at AirPods Pro 3, which seals properly and cancels noise properly.
If you mostly use Android, the case for any AirPods gets thin fast. The pairing, the device switching and the spatial audio all lean on owning other Apple hardware. Sony, Bose and Samsung all make earbuds that will treat an Android phone better.
And if you want over-ear rather than in-ear, that is AirPods Max 2 territory, not this line at all.
What would change this page
One thing only: a press release on Apple's own newsroom.
Not a regulatory filing, though those are real evidence that a device exists. Not a supply chain report. Not a well-sourced reporter. Apple publishing the product itself.
Until that happens this page stays as it is, and the date on it is the honest part.
