Apple states that it is powered by the H2 chip, that active noise cancellation is up to 1.5 times more effective than before, and that it adds Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation and Live Translation, along with studio quality audio recording and a camera remote. Apple lists support for 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio over USB-C, charging by USB-C, and up to 20 hours of listening with noise cancellation and spatial audio switched on. Apple lists five colours: midnight, starlight, blue, purple and orange.

Those figures belong to the AirPods Max 2. They are the baseline any third model would be measured against, not a description of one.

The thing reviewers keep raising, which no new chip fixes

Reviewers of the 2026 model were consistent on one point: the body did not change. 9to5Mac reported the same design, the same dimensions and the same 13.6 ounce weight, and summed it up as meaning that anyone who disliked how the original sat on their head will dislike this one too.

The other standing complaint is the case. AirPods Max does not fold, so it takes up a large amount of room in a bag, and that is a daily cost for anyone who travels with headphones rather than wearing them at a desk.
