TCL is best known for televisions and displays, built on price and volume with panel manufacturing of its own behind it. The display business is the centre of the company.
Phones sit alongside the TVs under two names. TCL sells handsets under its own brand, and it makes Alcatel-branded phones under a trademark licence from Nokia, which owns the Alcatel name. That phone business came from Alcatel itself: a joint venture between Alcatel and TCL began operating in August 2004, with TCL putting in EUR 55 million for 55 per cent, and in July 2005 Alcatel swapped its remaining 45 per cent for TCL Communication shares. Alcatel phones have sat at the value end ever since.
The group was founded in 1981 in Huizhou, Guangdong, as TTK. A 2019 restructuring split it in two: TCL Technology, listed in Shenzhen and focused on display technology and solar, and TCL Industries Holdings, the controlling shareholder of Hong Kong-listed TCL Electronics. Since 2020 the phone business, TCL Communication, has been part of TCL Electronics.
Don't confuse Alcatel phones with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, which sells office networking and communications gear. ALE also uses the name under licence from Nokia, but it's a separate company.
