About Alcatel
Nokia owns the Alcatel trademark. TCL makes Alcatel phones under licence, and its own Alcatel site spells it out: "Alcatel is a trademark of Nokia used under license by TCL Mobile."
So who owns TCL? It's a Chinese electronics group that started in Huizhou in 1981 and split into two groups in 2019. Since 2020, the phone side, TCL Communication, has been part of Hong Kong-listed TCL Electronics.
This page covers Alcatel-branded phones: value-focused smartphones and basic feature phones. It doesn't cover Nokia's network gear or Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, which is a different company again.
Who owns the Alcatel brand?
Nokia does. Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent agreed to combine in April 2015, through an all-share offer that valued Alcatel-Lucent at EUR 15.6 billion.
Nokia held about 76 per cent after its exchange offer in January 2016, ran the two as one group from 14 January 2016, and owned 100 per cent after a squeeze-out on 2 November 2016. The combined business was set to operate under the Nokia name.
Nokia doesn't sell Alcatel phones itself. It licenses the name, and the companies using it say so on their own sites.
How did TCL end up making Alcatel phones?
It took over Alcatel's handset business in two steps. According to Alcatel's 2005 annual filing with the SEC, a joint venture with TCL Communication Technology Holdings started operating on 31 August 2004. Alcatel put in its mobile handset business plus cash, worth about EUR 45 million in all, for 45 per cent. TCL put in EUR 55 million for 55 per cent.
The partnership didn't last. On 18 July 2005, Alcatel swapped its 45 per cent for TCL Communication shares, leaving TCL owning the whole venture.
So the Alcatel phone business really did come out of the old French Alcatel. TCL has run it since, and today uses the name under licence from Nokia.
Is TCL's Alcatel licence still active?
TCL says it is. Its Alcatel site, carrying a 2026 copyright line, states that Alcatel is a trademark of Nokia used under licence by TCL Mobile.
There's a regional wrinkle. In a May 2025 stock exchange filing, Dixon Technologies said NxtCell India "holds exclusive brand authorization from TCL" to run the Alcatel brand in India, with Dixon's Padget Electronics contracted to build the phones. So in India, the chain runs from Nokia to TCL to NxtCell.
Neither Nokia nor TCL has published the licence's length or end date in anything we could open. Don't assume it runs forever.
Who owns TCL?
TCL isn't one company anymore. A 2019 restructuring split it into TCL Technology Group and TCL Industries Holdings.
TCL Technology is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (code 000100) and focuses on display technology and solar. Li Dongsheng is its chairman and CEO, and its 2022 interim report named him, with a party acting in concert, as the largest shareholder at 8.26 per cent.
Alcatel phones sit on the other side. TCL Industries is the controlling shareholder of TCL Electronics, listed in Hong Kong as 01070.HK. TCL Electronics bought TCL Communication from TCL Industries in 2020 for CNY 1.5 billion in cash and consolidated it from September 2020.
Is Alcatel the same as Alcatel-Lucent?
No. Three companies own or use versions of the name, and they're easy to confuse.
Nokia owns the Alcatel trademark and makes network equipment. TCL makes Alcatel phones under licence. Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, known as ALE, sells enterprise networking, communications and cloud products, and its site says "The Alcatel-Lucent name and logo are trademarks of Nokia used under license by ALE."
So if you've got an Alcatel smartphone, support comes through TCL's Alcatel site. If you've got an office phone system or network switch with the Alcatel-Lucent badge, that's ALE. Different companies, different contracts.
How does Alcatel sit next to TCL's own phones?
TCL runs two phone brands. In 2020, TCL Electronics described TCL Communication's mobile business as running under two major brands, Alcatel and TCL. On Brandligo, you'll find TCL Phones and TCL Television alongside Alcatel under the same parent.
Alcatel is the value play. Its own site pitches accessible, value-focused smartphones and feature phones for practical buyers.
TCL's own-name range leans on its NXTPAPER screens, on phones like the TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro and the TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER tablet. If a reading-friendly screen matters more than the lowest price, start with TCL Phones. If price is everything, start here.
What to check before buying or partnering
For buyers: make sure the model is sold and supported in your country, using the Alcatel site for your region. In India the brand is run by NxtCell, so the support route may differ from elsewhere.
For businesses: get the chain of rights in writing. Nokia owns the trademark, TCL holds the licence, and regional partners like NxtCell may hold rights from TCL. Ask who holds them in your market, and until when.
And don't mix up Alcatel phones with ALE's enterprise kit.
