About Huawei

Huawei began in 1987 as a telecommunications equipment company and still is one - the network hardware business is larger than the consumer one and is what most of the world's carriers know it for. The phones came much later and made it a household name outside the industry. Two lines sit at the top of the consumer range. Mate is the technology-first flagship, where new silicon and new form factors appear. The P series, rebranded Pura, is the one Huawei describes as built around design and photography, and it is the line that made the company's camera work its reputation. The company was founded in Shenzhen by Ren Zhengfei, who had left the Chinese army's engineering corps when it was disbanded in 1983, reportedly starting with about USD 3,000. Its Honor sub-brand was sold in 2020, under US sanctions, to a consortium of buyers including the Shenzhen city government; Honor has been an independent company since and has its own listing here.
