About Notion

Notion Labs, Inc. is a privately held software company based in San Francisco. Co-founders Ivan Zhao and Simon Last have described Notion as an effort to make software toolmaking more accessible, starting with a flexible workspace that lets people combine documents, databases, project tracking and knowledge in one environment. The company also identifies Akshay Kothari as a co-founder in its current editorial materials. Notion's corporate direction has expanded from an all-in-one workspace toward what it now calls an AI workspace. The company has added AI search, meeting notes, personal and custom agents, calendar and email-related capabilities around the core workspace. Its current website says more than 100 million people use Notion worldwide and that the product is used by 62 percent of the Fortune 100. These are company-published adoption figures rather than independently audited measures, so they are best treated as indicators of Notion's reported scale. Acquisitions have contributed to that expansion. Notion acquired Cron in June 2022, bringing a dedicated calendar product into the company. In February 2024, Notion announced that the Skiff team was joining the company. These moves fit a broader strategy of bringing more daily work into a common system rather than treating documents, schedules, knowledge and AI as completely separate tools. Notion remains a software-as-a-service business. Its commercial model combines a free workspace tier with paid per-member plans and enterprise contracts. AI capabilities are increasingly packaged with the Business and Enterprise tiers, while some higher-consumption automation uses a credit model. This matters to procurement teams because Notion's cost is no longer only a seat-price comparison. Usage of agents, team size, security requirements, integrations and the number of workspaces can change the effective cost. The company has also invested in enterprise security and governance. Notion publishes a Trust Center and states that it maintains SOC 2 Type 2 and multiple ISO certifications, including ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701. Enterprise controls include SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, domain management and security integrations. Its AI security documentation says customer data is not used to train third-party AI models and describes zero-retention processing for Enterprise use cases where supported. Notion's platform strategy creates both benefits and procurement questions. Consolidating docs, knowledge, project tracking, search and AI can reduce the number of disconnected systems a team manages. It can also increase dependence on one workspace for important operational knowledge. Buyers evaluating Notion at company scale should consider information architecture, permissions, export and backup requirements, identity management, AI governance, integration dependencies and how much business process logic is being embedded in Notion databases and automations. The company continues to ship product changes quickly. In 2026, releases have emphasized Custom Agents, AI Meeting Notes, search across connected systems and tighter links among workspace, calendar and mail-related workflows. That pace is useful for organizations that want an actively evolving platform, but it also means administrators should review release notes and plan entitlements rather than assuming that older Notion documentation or pricing remains current.
