Apple has not announced a new Mac mini. No chip, no price, no date, no product page. The machine on sale is still the M4 and M4 Pro model that Apple announced on 29 October 2024 and shipped on 1 November 2024, and WWDC in June 2026 came and went without a replacement.

There is one thing Apple has said about the Mac mini's future, and it is worth knowing because almost every other claim you will read is a leak. On 24 February 2026 Apple announced that Mac mini production is coming to a new factory in Houston, Texas later in 2026, the first time the product will be made in the United States. That is a statement about where the machine gets built. It says nothing about what will be inside it.

This page sets out what is actually on sale, how uneven the update history is, why the reporting on the next chip contradicts itself, and what to do if you need a small desktop now.

Has Apple announced a new Mac mini?

No.

There is no press release, no product page and no date. Apple did not update the Mac mini at WWDC in June 2026, which is the event a good deal of the speculation had pointed at.

What exists instead is a set of reports that do not agree with each other, which is the clearest possible sign that they are leaks rather than information. Macworld, citing Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, reports that Apple plans to put an M6 in the base Mac mini and an M5 Pro in the higher-end model, a change from an earlier expectation of M5 and M5 Pro. MacRumors describes both an M5 Pro and an M6 Mac mini as in development and says plainly that launch timing is not known, offering 2026, early 2027 and later in 2027 as live possibilities.

When two outlets working from the same reporter cannot settle on a chip generation, printing one on a product page would be a guess wearing the clothes of a fact.

The one thing Apple has actually confirmed

On 24 February 2026 Apple announced that it will produce the Mac mini at a new factory in Houston, Texas, starting later in 2026. Apple said this is the first time the Mac mini will be made in the United States, that the site doubles the size of its existing Houston campus, and that Tim Cook expects production to begin later in the year.

Read that carefully, because it is easy to over-read. Apple committed to a place and a rough window for manufacturing. It did not announce a new model, a new chip or a new price, and a factory opening is not a product launch.

It does mean that if a new Mac mini arrives from late 2026 onwards, there is a reasonable chance it is the first one assembled in Texas. That is a fact about the supply chain rather than a reason to wait.

What is on sale in the Mac mini line right now

The M4 and M4 Pro Mac mini, announced on 29 October 2024 and on sale from 1 November 2024. Apple's own Mac mini page states it is sold with the M4 or M4 Pro chip.

Apple lists two USB-C ports and a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the front, and a power port, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port and three Thunderbolt ports on the back. The Thunderbolt generation differs by chip, with Thunderbolt 4 on the M4 and Thunderbolt 5 on the M4 Pro, which matters if you are buying it to drive fast external storage.

On price, Macworld reports that the 599 US dollar entry configuration has been discontinued and that the line now starts at 799 dollars with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage. That is a change in the wrong direction for a machine whose whole argument was cost, and it is worth checking on Apple's configurator rather than taking any figure here on trust.

How often does Apple actually update the Mac mini?

On no schedule at all, and in no consistent month.

The M2 and M2 Pro Mac mini launched on 24 January 2023. The M4 and M4 Pro version followed on 29 October 2024. That is a gap of twenty one months, and the two launches sit at opposite ends of the calendar.

As of August 2026 the current machine is approaching twenty two months old, which is already past the length of the last gap. That is the strongest thing the record supports, and it still is not a prediction. A line that has updated in January and in October, with no annual event attached to it, can move in any month Apple chooses.

Why the memory shortage is the part to watch

Both Macworld and MacRumors give the same reason for the uncertainty, and it is not engineering.

MacRumors reports that a global shortage of memory chips, and the cost that comes with it, has forced Apple to adjust its Mac refresh plans across 2026 and 2027, and that this is why the timing on both the Mac mini and the Mac Studio is unclear. Macworld reports the same pressure and expects prices to rise rather than fall, floating a higher entry point for the next model.

That reframes the usual advice about waiting. Waiting for a new model normally means waiting for more machine at the same price. If the reporting is right, this time it may mean waiting for a similar machine at a higher one. Nobody can confirm that until Apple publishes, but it is the risk sitting on the other side of the decision.

Who should buy something else

Anyone who needs a small desktop now should buy the current M4 or M4 Pro Mac mini. There is no announced product to wait for, credible reporting puts the next one anywhere from late 2026 to late 2027, and the pricing pressure points upwards.

Anyone doing sustained heavy work, large renders, long compiles or local AI models should look at the Mac Studio instead. The Mac mini stops at the Pro tier of chip, and the ceiling arrives sooner than people expect.

Anyone who needs the machine to move should buy a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. A desktop that costs less is worth nothing on the days the work happens somewhere other than the desk.

Anyone tempted by the old 599 dollar price should check what is actually on sale before planning around it. Macworld reports that configuration is gone, and a budget built on a discontinued price is a budget that breaks at the checkout.

Anyone who wants to run Windows software natively, add internal drives or upgrade memory later should buy a small form factor PC. Mac mini memory is fixed at purchase and there is nothing to open up afterwards.

What would change this page

An Apple press release, or a Mac mini product page on Apple's own site showing a new chip.

Not a roadmap piece. Not a supply chain report. Not a reporter with a good record, and not two of them agreeing, because on this product they currently do not.
