About Cohere

Cohere builds large language models and sells them to enterprises rather than to consumers. The distinction shapes the whole company: its stated focus is regulated industries - finance, healthcare, manufacturing, energy - and the public sector, where a model that cannot be deployed inside the customer's own environment is not a candidate at all, however good it is. The company was founded in 2019 in Toronto by Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang, who met as students at the University of Toronto. Gomez was one of the eight authors of the 2017 paper that introduced the transformer, the architecture underneath every current large language model, and Frosst worked in the research tradition around Geoffrey Hinton at Toronto. It remains headquartered in Toronto, with offices in Montreal, New York, San Francisco, London, Paris and Seoul.
