Clio makes practice management software for law firms - the system that holds matters, tracked time, billing and client records. Its bet in 2008 was that this should live in a browser rather than on a server in the office, at a point when the legal profession's instinct about client confidentiality made that a hard argument to win. The target was deliberately the smaller end of the profession: solo practitioners and small firms, who had the same administrative burden as large ones and none of the staff to absorb it. That is a segment most enterprise legal software had ignored because the deal sizes are small. The company was founded in 2008 by Jack Newton and Rian Gauvreau, both software developers, and is headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia. Its legal name is Themis Solutions Inc. In 2019 it raised USD 250 million, reported at the time as the largest venture round in Canadian history, and has since raised USD 900 million more at a valuation reported around USD 3 billion.
