The iPhone 18 Pro Max is unannounced. Apple has not named it, priced it, dated it or published a single specification for it, and there is no Apple product page to link to. As of 15 August 2026, Apple's own iPhone page lists the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16. No iPhone 18 of any kind appears on it.

This page describes the Pro Max as a position in Apple's range rather than as a set of numbers nobody outside Apple has. The Pro Max is the largest and most expensive iPhone, and the decision it asks a buyer to make has been the same for several generations: whether a bigger screen and a longer battery are worth carrying a heavier phone and paying more for it. That question is answerable today. The specification of the next model is not.

Has Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

No. There is no press release, no product page and no event invitation.

Reporting in August 2026 from MacRumors and 9to5Mac places a Pro launch in September. Specific dates have circulated, including 8, 9, 14 and 15 September. Apple had sent no invitation when this page was checked, and Apple invitations have historically gone out about two weeks ahead of the event.

A second report is worth naming, because it changes the shape of this year rather than one specification. MacRumors and 9to5Mac both report that Apple intends to split the iPhone launch for the first time, announcing only the Pro models and a new foldable in September 2026 and holding the standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e and the iPhone Air 2 until around March 2027. Apple has confirmed none of this.

Reports also circulate about a new chip, a new modem, a variable aperture camera and a smaller Dynamic Island. Those are supply chain and analyst claims. This page prints no specification drawn from them.

What the Pro Max is within the iPhone range

The Pro Max is not a separate phone from the Pro. Across recent generations it has been the same phone in a larger body, with the same chip and the same cameras, differing in three things: screen size, battery life and the storage ceiling.

That makes it the simplest tier in the range to shop for, because the trade is explicit. You are buying size and endurance. You are not buying a capability the Pro lacks.

It also makes it the tier where the wrong choice is most annoying. A Pro Max that turns out to be too large for a pocket or for one handed use is an expensive mistake that no software update fixes, and the extra weight is felt every day rather than on a specification sheet.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is the phone on sale today

Apple announced the iPhone 17 Pro Max on 9 September 2025. It starts at 1,199 dollars.

Apple states a 6.9 inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, an A19 Pro chip with a 6 core GPU, and a rear camera system of three 48MP Fusion cameras: main, ultra wide, and a telephoto Apple describes as offering 8x optical quality zoom. The front camera is 18MP. The body is a heat forged aluminium unibody with a laser welded vapour chamber, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front.

Two figures separate it from the smaller iPhone 17 Pro. Apple claims up to 39 hours of video playback on the Pro Max, which it calls the best battery life of any iPhone. And the Pro Max is the only iPhone sold with 2TB of storage, on top of the 256GB, 512GB and 1TB tiers the Pro also offers.

Those numbers belong to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. They are printed here because a successor gets measured against them, not because anything about a successor is known.

Why this year's question is not the usual one

For several years the largest iPhone has also been the most expensive one, and the two facts made a single decision. Reporting in August 2026 suggests that may stop being true.

MacRumors and 9to5Mac both report that Apple will introduce a foldable iPhone in September 2026, reportedly under the name iPhone Ultra, and that it will sit alongside the Pro Max rather than replace it. If that happens, the buyer who wants the largest screen Apple sells and the buyer who wants the most expensive iPhone Apple sells stop being the same person, and the Pro Max becomes the conventional large phone rather than the top of the range.

None of that is confirmed. It is set out here because it is the part that would change how the Pro Max should be read, and a reader deciding whether to wait deserves to know what the wait is actually about.

Pro Max or Pro

Buy the Pro Max for two reasons and no others: you want the larger screen, or you want the longer battery. On recent generations those are the differences, along with the 2TB storage option.

Buy the Pro if the phone lives in a pocket rather than a bag, if you use it one handed, or if you have ever found a large phone tiring to hold while reading. The Pro is the same phone in every way that shows up in benchmarks and photographs.

The honest test is physical rather than technical. Handle both before deciding, because the specification sheets will not tell you which one is comfortable, and comfort is the entire difference.

Who should buy something else

Anyone who needs a phone now should buy one that exists. There is no announced product here, no confirmed date, and reporting that places the standard models in 2027 rather than this autumn. Waiting on an unannounced phone is an open ended wait.

Anyone who wants the standard iPhone rather than a Pro should read the split launch reporting carefully. If it is right, the iPhone 18 will not appear until around March 2027, and the current iPhone 17 or iPhone 17e is the machine to compare against rather than something arriving in September.

Anyone holding an iPhone 17 Pro Max should skip this generation unless a specific new capability appears that they need. Year over year gains at the top of the iPhone range have been incremental for several generations, and Pro Max prices make a one year cycle poor value.

Anyone who finds large phones uncomfortable should not buy any Pro Max, this one included. The size is the product. If it does not suit your hand or your pocket, nothing else on the specification sheet compensates.

Anyone shopping mainly on price should look further down Apple's own range. Apple still sells the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 16, and all three do the things most people use a phone for.

What would change this page

An Apple press release, or an Apple product page. Nothing else.

Not a leaked part. Not a supply chain note. Not a well sourced reporter with a good record. Until Apple publishes the phone, this page carries no chip, no camera specification, no battery figure, no price and no date, and the empty fields are the accurate report rather than an omission.
