Apple has not announced a new iPad Air, and that includes the name. Apple labels each iPad Air by the chip inside it rather than by a generation number, so the next one has no correct name until Apple ships it. Any name you have seen with a chip in it is a guess.

As of 15 August 2026 the current model is the iPad Air with M4, which Apple announced on 2 March 2026. It is a few months old. That matters more than any rumour on this page: the case for waiting is weakest immediately after a refresh, and this line has just had one.

Has Apple announced a new iPad Air?

No. There is no press release, no product page, no price and no date.

Apple's own iPad Air pages on 15 August 2026 list the M4 model as current, with nothing behind it.

Reporting exists and is set out below, but it should be read with the calendar in mind. Apple refreshed this line in March 2026. Anything described as the next iPad Air is at least a year away on the line's own recent record, and Apple has said nothing about it.

The iPad Air on sale today

Apple announced the iPad Air with M4 on 2 March 2026. Pre orders opened on 4 March and availability began on 11 March.

Apple lists 11 inch and 13 inch Liquid Retina sizes, an M4 chip with an 8 core CPU and a 9 core GPU, storage in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB configurations, a 12MP Wide back camera with Smart HDR and 4K video, a 12MP Center Stage front camera mounted on the long edge for video calls, all day battery life, and four finishes in blue, purple, starlight and space gray. It works with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple's stated United States starting prices are $599 for the 11 inch Wi-Fi model and $799 for the 13 inch Wi-Fi model.

Those figures belong to the M4 model. They are the baseline a successor would be measured against, not a forecast of one.

The reported display change, and why to treat it carefully

The interesting claim about the next iPad Air is not the chip. It is the screen.

AppleInsider, relaying Bloomberg on 16 July 2026, places the next iPad Air refresh in spring 2027. A separate report from April 2026 says that model moves to an OLED display, with panel production beginning in December 2026 for a launch around March 2027. An OLED panel would be the first real change to how this tablet looks since the size options were added, rather than another step in speed.

One caution belongs with that. Reporting on this line has been unreliable about chips specifically, because leaks that circulated as being about a future iPad Air described the M4 model Apple has since shipped. Timing claims made before a launch and repeated afterwards are easy to misread. Treat spring 2027 and the OLED claim as reporting from named outlets rather than as anything Apple has confirmed, and note that no price for such a machine exists anywhere.

Where the iPad Air sits in Apple's tablet range

The iPad Air is the middle of the range, and it is a genuinely awkward middle in a useful way.

Against the base iPad it adds an M series chip, Apple Intelligence support, Apple Pencil Pro support and a 13 inch size option. Against the iPad Pro it gives up the better display technology, the thinner body, the faster chip tier and the higher memory ceiling.

The practical reading is that the Air is the tablet for someone whose work is real but not extreme. Drawing, note taking, photo editing, split screen work and long documents all sit comfortably here. The Pro exists for people whose work would notice the ceiling, and most people never meet it.

What to weigh against its nearest rival

The comparison that decides this most often is downward rather than upward. The base iPad costs considerably less and does the reading, video, browsing and mail that make up most tablet use just as well. The Air earns its price on Apple Intelligence, on Apple Pencil Pro, and on the M series chip carrying demanding apps. If none of those three is on your list, the cheaper tablet is the better buy and the difference is not subtle.

Upward, against the iPad Pro, the questions are the display and sustained load. If you edit video on the tablet, or if you look at the screen in the dark often enough for panel technology to matter, the Pro is a real upgrade. Otherwise the Air is the same experience for less.

Against a laptop, price the keyboard case in before comparing. An iPad Air with a keyboard and a Pencil approaches laptop money while remaining a tablet, which is the right choice only if a tablet is what you actually want.

Who should buy something else

Anyone whose use is reading, video, browsing and mail should buy the base iPad. The Air's advantages are specific, and none of them appears in that list.

Anyone who already has the M3 iPad Air should skip. One chip generation on this line is not a difference you will meet in ordinary use.

Anyone who edits video seriously or wants the best screen Apple puts in a tablet should buy an iPad Pro instead.

Anyone who cares specifically about display quality and can wait should read the OLED reporting above before spending. That is the one reported change worth waiting through, and the wait is into 2027 at the earliest on reporting that Apple has not confirmed.

Anyone mainly typing should buy a laptop. This is a tablet with a keyboard available, not a laptop with a screen that detaches.

An Apple press release, or an Apple product page. Nothing short of either.

Not a panel production schedule, not an analyst note, not a code leak. Until Apple publishes the tablet, this page carries no chip, no display specification, no price and no date for a next iPad Air, and it does not carry a name for one either.
