The Galaxy Tab S12 is the next generation of Samsung's flagship Android tablet line, and as of August 2026 it has not launched. Samsung has confirmed that it is coming, and almost nothing else. On the company's July 2026 earnings call, Daniel Araujo of the Mobile eXperience planning group listed the Tab S12 among the premium products arriving in the second half of the year, alongside a new foldable series and the Watch Ultra 2. That sentence is close to the whole of the official record. Samsung has not held an event for the line, has not said how many models it will contain, and has not published a specification, a price or a release date. Reports naming a processor, a screen size or a launch day are leaks, and none of them are repeated here.

What Samsung has actually confirmed

The confirmation came in an unusual venue. Rather than a teaser or a press release, the Tab S12 was named in passing during an earnings call, in a passage about protecting margins: the plan was to maintain momentum behind the Galaxy S26 series while launching the new premium products of the second half, among them the new foldable series, the Tab S12 and the Watch Ultra 2.

Read carefully, it commits Samsung to two things only: the product exists as a funded plan, and it is intended for the second half of 2026. It does not confirm a base model, an Ultra, a Plus, a chipset, a price or a day. Several outlets have inferred a September window from the pattern of previous launches, and that inference is reasonable, but it is not a statement by Samsung and it is not treated as one here.

What the current Tab S11 series tells you about the range

The most reliable guide to where a Tab S12 would sit is the range it replaces, which is documented rather than rumoured. Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S11 and Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra on 4 September 2025. The Ultra carries a 14.6 inch AMOLED screen in a body 5.1mm thick, which Samsung described as the thinnest Galaxy Tab to date. The smaller Tab S11 uses an 11.0 inch screen at 5.5mm. Both run the MediaTek Dimensity 9400+, both refresh at 120Hz, and both take a microSD card.

US pricing started at 799.99 dollars for the Tab S11 and 1,199.99 dollars for the Tab S11 Ultra. The S Pen was redesigned for that generation with a hexagonal barrel and a new tip, and it dropped the Bluetooth radio that earlier styluses used for air gestures, which removed a feature some owners of older tablets relied on.

That spread, with a very large screen at the top and a more conventional one below it, is the shape of the range. Nothing Samsung has said suggests the Tab S12 abandons it.

Where this line sits against its rivals

The Galaxy Tab S series is the main Android answer to the iPad Pro, and it competes on two things Apple does not offer. The first is screen size: at 14.6 inches the Ultra is larger than any iPad Apple sells, and for people who want a tablet that doubles as a portable second display or a drawing surface, that gap matters more than any benchmark. The second is desktop mode, since Samsung DeX turns the tablet into something closer to a windowed computer when it is docked or paired with a keyboard.

What the line has generally not won on is sustained processor performance and the depth of tablet-specific software. Reviews of the Tab S11 Ultra praised the hardware while noting that the chipset sits below what Apple puts in an iPad Pro. Choosing between the two really means choosing between a bigger, more flexible screen running Android, and a faster machine with a more mature library of tablet applications.

Who the Galaxy Tab S line is for

This is a range for people already living in Android and Samsung's own software. If you carry a Galaxy phone, the handoff between devices, the shared clipboard and the ability to answer calls on the tablet are conveniences a competing tablet cannot reproduce.

It also suits two jobs well. One is note-taking and illustration, because the S Pen is included in the box rather than sold separately, which is a real difference in cost against Apple's arrangement. The other is media, because a large, bright AMOLED panel is a better film screen than most laptops.

Should you wait for the Tab S12 or buy now

If you need a tablet today, buying a Tab S11 or Tab S11 Ultra is a defensible decision. The line updates roughly once a year, so a purchase made now sits one generation behind for a while, and a model in its final months before replacement is usually the one carrying the deepest discounts.

If you can wait, waiting costs little but time. Samsung has confirmed a second-half window, so the wait is measured in months rather than years, and a new generation usually pulls the price of the outgoing one down whether or not you buy the new model. The thing worth avoiding is paying full recommended price for a Tab S11 late in its life.

Who should buy something else

Anyone whose work depends on a specific professional application should check that it exists on Android tablets before committing, because several drawing, audio and video tools are still iPad-only or are noticeably reduced on Android. For those people an iPad is the honest recommendation regardless of what the Tab S12 turns out to be.

Anyone who mostly wants a cheap screen for video and browsing is overpaying here. Samsung's own Galaxy Tab A range and the standard iPad both cover that use for a fraction of the money, and the features that justify a flagship tablet go unused.

Anyone who wants a laptop should buy a laptop. A tablet with a keyboard folio is heavier and more expensive than a competent portable computer once the accessories are counted, and DeX is a good desktop mode rather than a desktop operating system.
