The Galaxy Z Flip8 is the clamshell foldable in Samsung's Galaxy Z range, announced at Galaxy Unpacked in London on 22 July 2026 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. It folds the short way, so a 6.9 inch phone becomes something that sits flat in a coat pocket, and the 4.1 inch FlexWindow on the outside is meant to handle enough of the day that the phone stays shut. Samsung set the launch price at 1,199.99 US dollars, which makes it the cheapest way into the company's foldable line by a wide margin. The Z Fold8 starts at 1,899 dollars and the Z Fold8 Ultra at 2,099 dollars. General availability began on 7 August 2026.

Where the Galaxy Z Flip8 sits in Samsung's foldable range

Samsung sells foldables in two shapes, and choosing between them is less about specification than about which problem you want solved. The Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra open into a small tablet, trading pocket space for screen area. The Z Flip8 does the reverse. Unfolded it is an ordinary 6.9 inch phone at 6.1 mm thick and 180 g. Folded it is 85.7 mm tall and 13.1 mm thick, so it is chunkier than a slab phone but takes up roughly half the footprint.

Nothing about the Flip8 makes it more capable than a conventional Galaxy phone at similar money. What it sells is a shape, plus a cover screen you can run notifications, quick toggles and a growing set of full apps on without opening the device at all.

Who the Galaxy Z Flip8 is for

This suits people who want the phone to disappear when it is not in use, and who spend most of the day in messaging, camera and music apps rather than in documents.

The hinge is the other argument. Because the phone stands up on its own, the rear 50 MP camera becomes a hands free selfie camera at whatever angle you set, which Samsung calls FlexCam. Video adds Horizon Lock, which keeps footage level while the phone moves. The reworked FlexWindow shows Now Brief summaries and takes gestures, so short interactions do not need the phone opened.

Buyers who read long documents, work in split screen, or want a telephoto lens get the least out of this design.

What Samsung changed this generation

Samsung's own framing this year is thinness and the cover screen rather than the camera. The chassis is slimmer than the previous Flip and the processor is new: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in the United States, Canada and China, with an Exynos 2600 in other regions according to GSMArena's specification sheet. It ships on One UI 9, based on Android 17.

The FlexWindow picked up new gestures, full notifications, quick toggles and a wider set of apps that open properly on the cover screen. Rear camera hardware carried over: a 50 MP wide and a 12 MP ultra wide, with a 10 MP camera inside. Anyone upgrading from a Flip7 mainly for photography should read a camera review before ordering, because that is not where the work went.

How the Galaxy Z Flip8 compares with the Motorola Razr Ultra

The nearest direct rival is the Motorola Razr Ultra (2026) at 1,499.99 dollars, which is 300 dollars above the Flip8.

Motorola wins most of the parts you can measure. It has a 5,000 mAh battery against 4,300 mAh, 68 W wired and 30 W wireless charging against 25 W and 15 W, and dual 50 MP rear sensors with 8K video against Samsung's 50 MP and 12 MP pairing. Cover screens are close, at 4 inches against 4.1 inches.

Samsung wins on price, on shipping with Android 17 while the Razr Ultra ships on Android 16, and on the length of software support Galaxy phones carry. If battery life and charging speed decide it for you, the extra 300 dollars buys something real and the Razr is the better phone. If you want the newer silicon and the longer update runway, the Flip8 is.

Flip8 or Galaxy Z Fold8

Inside Samsung's own range the comparison that matters is against the Z Fold8 at 1,899 dollars. The Flip8 costs 700 dollars less and gives up the inner tablet display, the larger camera system and the extra battery that comes with a bigger body.

The question is honest and easy to answer. If you want a phone that becomes a small tablet for reading, drawing or two apps at once, the Fold8 is the one and the Flip8 will not grow into it. If you want a normal phone that becomes smaller, the Flip8 is the one and the Fold8 is 700 dollars of screen you will carry every day whether or not you open it.

Who should buy something else

Several groups should look past this phone.

Anyone who wants the best battery life for the money should not buy a clamshell foldable at all. A 4,300 mAh cell in a 6.1 mm body is not competitive with a conventional phone costing considerably less.

Anyone who relies on optical zoom should look elsewhere, because there is no dedicated telephoto camera in this line.

Anyone rough on hardware should read the IP48 rating carefully. It covers immersion, but the dust rating is lower than the IP68 on Samsung's non folding flagships, so building sites, beaches and workshops remain a risk that a slab phone handles better.

Anyone whose main requirement is value should price the Galaxy S range first. The same money buys more camera and more battery in a body that does not fold, and the folding is the entire premium here.

Storage, colours and availability

Pre-orders opened on 22 July 2026 and general availability started on 7 August 2026.

Storage is 256 GB or 512 GB, both with 12 GB of RAM. There is no memory card slot, so anyone who keeps video on the device should take the larger option at the point of purchase rather than plan to add to it later.

Samsung's US newsroom lists the colours as Pink, Graphite, Cream and Mint, with Mint sold as an online exclusive. Availability of individual shades varies by market, so check the local Samsung store before setting your heart on one.
