About Maqsad
Maqsad is a learning platform for Pakistani secondary and higher-secondary students, built for a phone rather than adapted to one. That constraint is the product decision: the students it is aimed at have a smartphone and a data plan, and very often do not have a desk, a laptop, or the money for the private tuition that shadows the school system. The content follows the national curriculum rather than a general syllabus, which is what makes it usable for the exams these students are actually sitting. The name is the Urdu word for purpose. The company was founded in 2021 by Taha Ahmed and Rooshan Aziz, school friends who studied at the London School of Economics and worked in London - Rooshan at BNP Paribas, Taha at L.E.K. Consulting - before returning to Karachi to start it. It raised a USD 2.1 million pre-seed led by Indus Valley Capital, reported at the time as the largest edtech round raised in Pakistan, followed by a USD 2.8 million seed led by Speedinvest.
