Bykea competes with Uber and Careem in Pakistan by not trying to be either of them. The vehicle is a motorcycle, which costs a fraction of a car to buy, fuel and maintain, and that difference passes through to a fare most of the market can afford. The app is in Urdu. The result is a service aimed at the people who were never going to be the customer for a car-based ride. Around the rides sit two other products. A courier service that lets small businesses send parcels across a city the same day, and cash transfer, which matters in an economy where a great deal of money still moves as cash between people who do not both have bank accounts. The company was started in December 2016 in Karachi by Muneeb Maayr, Abdul Mannan, Ishaq Kothwala and Rafiq Malik. Maayr, its chief executive, had previously co-founded the ecommerce company Daraz.pk and sold it to Alibaba in 2018.
