About Apple Watch Ultra 4
Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the unannounced next model in Apple's largest and toughest watch line. As of 15 August 2026, Apple has published nothing about it: no name, no date, no price, no chip, no feature list. Reports from Bloomberg and DigiTimes describe a faster processor and health additions, but a report is not an announcement, and this page does not print rumour as fact. What it does instead is set out what the Ultra line is, where it sits in Apple's range, who it genuinely suits, and what somebody searching for the Ultra 4 today should actually do about it.
What Apple has confirmed about the Apple Watch Ultra 4
Nothing at all. Apple's own store and product pages list the Apple Watch Ultra 3 as the current model, and Apple Newsroom carries no announcement of a fourth generation. Outside Apple, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that new watch models are in late-stage testing, that the headline change is a faster processor, and that health and fitness tracking gains improvements he does not specify. DigiTimes has reported a high blood pressure notification feature. A Touch ID sensor, rumoured earlier, is now described as unlikely. None of that is an Apple statement, so none of it appears on this page as a specification. When Apple publishes, this page will carry Apple's own figures and leave the rest out.
Where the Ultra sits in the Apple Watch range
Apple sells three watch lines at once. The Apple Watch SE is the entry point. The Apple Watch Series is the mainstream model most buyers should look at first. The Ultra is the top of the range: the largest case, the brightest screen, the longest battery, and the only one with satellite communication built in. The current Ultra 3 uses a 49mm titanium case in natural or black, reaches up to 3000 nits, quotes up to 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode, and carries 5G cellular alongside the satellite link. The Ultra has been dive rated since the first generation. A fourth generation replaces the Ultra 3 at the top of that range; it does not open a new tier below or above it.
Who the Ultra line is actually for
The Ultra earns its premium for people whose watch has to survive something and keep running. Divers, open water swimmers, trail and ultra runners, hikers who go past the edge of coverage, and anyone who wants a full weekend of tracking without hunting for a charger. The satellite link matters if you spend time where no network reaches and nobody expects to hear from you for a day. The 49mm case and the brightness matter if you read a watch at arm's length in direct sun, or through a dive mask. If none of that describes an ordinary month for you, the Ultra's advantages are things you will pay for and never call on.
What to weigh it against
Inside Apple's range, the comparison that matters is Ultra against Series, not Ultra against SE. The Series carries the same health sensors and the same watchOS features in a smaller, lighter, cheaper case. What the Ultra adds is size, brightness, battery life, the dive rating and satellite. For a lot of buyers that is a large amount of money for capability they will not use.
Outside Apple, the Ultra runs against Garmin's Fenix and Epix families and the outdoor watches from Suunto and Polar. Those give up watchOS apps and iPhone integration in exchange for battery measured in weeks rather than days and on-watch mapping built for people who navigate from the wrist. Samsung's Galaxy Watch Ultra is the closest Android equivalent and is not a candidate here, because every Apple Watch pairs only with an iPhone.
Who should buy something else
Most people. If you want an Apple Watch this month, buy the Apple Watch Ultra 3 or a Series model rather than waiting: the reported change for the next generation is a faster chip and health refinements, and a faster chip is the upgrade least likely to alter how a watch feels in daily use. If price is the constraint, the Apple Watch SE covers notifications, workouts, heart rate and fall detection for a fraction of the Ultra's cost. If you need a week between charges or full navigation without a phone in your pocket, a Garmin will serve you better and cost less than an Ultra with cellular. If you carry an Android phone, no Apple Watch is an option at all. The only people who should wait are those buying within a short window who can absorb a delay, for the reason set out below.
Why this page gives no release date
Apple announced the first Apple Watch Ultra on 7 September 2022 and put it on sale on 23 September. The Ultra 2 followed in September 2023. In 2024 there was no new Ultra: Apple shipped a black titanium finish for the Ultra 2 and left the generation alone. The Ultra 3 was announced on 9 September 2025 and went on sale on 19 September. The month has held. The year has not, and a single skipped year is enough to make an annual cadence an assumption rather than a rule. Reporting currently points at September 2026, and reporting is not an announcement. If you are close to buying and can wait a few weeks, waiting through September costs little.
