About Apple Watch Ultra
Apple Watch Ultra is the rugged, titanium end of Apple's watch range: one case size, one material, and a feature set aimed at people who dive, race, and spend real time away from a charger. It has been a three generation line since 2022, and the current model is the Ultra 3, which arrived in September 2025 with built-in satellite communications, 5G, and the largest display Apple has put on a watch.
The short version is that this is the best sports watch Apple makes and the only one rated for scuba. It is still an Apple Watch first, though. Battery life is counted in hours where Garmin counts in days, and there is no Android version of any of it.

Where does the Apple Watch Ultra sit in Apple's range?
Apple sells three watch families. The SE is the entry model, the Series is the mainstream health watch, and the Ultra is the outdoor and endurance tier.
The gap between Series and Ultra is not really about health sensors. The Series 11 and the Ultra 3 run the same S10 chip and carry the same health list: hypertension notifications, ECG, blood oxygen, sleep score, and sleep apnea notifications. What the extra money buys is the case, the battery, the brightness, the Action button, and the dive rating.
If you want the health features and nothing else, the Series is the cheaper way to reach them.
What does every Apple Watch Ultra have in common?
Across all three generations the line has held to one specification. A 49mm titanium case. A flat sapphire crystal front. WR100 water resistance under ISO 22810:2010, rated for recreational scuba to 40 metres. IP6X dust resistance. A customisable Action button on the left flank. Cellular built in as standard.
Two of those matter more than they look. There is no GPS-only Ultra, so you are buying a cellular watch whether or not you activate a plan. And there is no smaller size, so a 49mm case is the only case. Anyone with a slim wrist should try one on before ordering.
One upside of the fixed case: bands carry across every generation.
How has the line changed since 2022?
The original Ultra set the format in 2022 and has not been redesigned since.
The Ultra 2 followed in 2023 with the S9 chip, peak brightness raised to 3000 nits, and the double tap gesture. A black titanium finish arrived in 2024.
The Ultra 3, in September 2025, is the larger step. Satellite communications, 5G in place of 4G, and a bigger screen achieved by thinning the borders rather than growing the case. LTPO3 and wide-angle OLED let the always-on display refresh once a second, so the seconds hand ticks without a wrist lift. Rated battery went from 36 hours to 42.
What do the battery numbers actually mean?
Apple quotes up to 42 hours of normal use, up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode, and up to 14 hours of outdoor workout with full GPS and heart rate.
That last figure is the one to read if you race. Fourteen hours of full GPS covers a marathon, an Ironman, and most long day hikes. It does not cover a hundred mile ultra, and testers who put the watch through endurance events have said as much.
Fast charging is the practical answer for daily use: roughly 12 hours of normal use from 15 minutes on the charger. Top it up while you shower and the 42 hour figure stops mattering much.
How does satellite messaging work, and what happens after two years?
Satellite is the Ultra 3's headline addition and is not available on earlier models. With no cellular and no Wi-Fi, the watch can reach emergency services, send and receive messages, and share your location through Find My.
Apple includes these features free for two years from activation. Emergency SOS via satellite works without a cellular plan. Messages and Find My via satellite need one.
What the service costs after year two has not been published. On a watch people keep for years, that is worth pricing into the decision rather than discovering later.
Apple Watch Ultra vs Garmin Fenix: which should you buy?
This is the comparison most buyers actually run, and the answer is not close in either direction.
Apple wins on display quality, everyday smartwatch behaviour, and price. The Ultra 3 launched at $799 against $1,199 and up for a Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED.
Garmin wins on endurance by a wide margin. Reviewers running both report roughly 8 to 15 days of smartwatch use from a Fenix 8 Pro against the Ultra's 42 hours, and 23 to 41 hours of multi-band GPS against 14. Garmin also pairs with Android, and its training analysis goes deeper.
Apple's counter is the water rating. The Ultra is rated for recreational scuba to 40 metres, though the dive computer itself is the third-party Oceanic+ app, which carries its own subscription. Budget for that if diving is the reason you are buying.
The software support question that is not on the box
In June 2026 Apple confirmed that watchOS 27 will not run on the first generation Ultra. That watch launched in 2022 at $799 and lost access to new software after about four years, well short of the six or so years Apple Watch owners had come to expect. The Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 remain supported.
This is the part no product page mentions and it belongs in the maths. At this price the useful life of the hardware is set by the chip inside it, and the line has now shown it will drop a premium model early. Buying the current generation buys the longest remaining runway.
Who should buy something else?
Android users have no route in. Every Ultra needs an iPhone, and the Ultra 3 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later.
Anyone doing multi-day trips away from power should look at Garmin or Coros instead. Two days is the ceiling here, and no setting changes that.
Existing Ultra 2 owners have a weak case for upgrading. Hypertension notifications and sleep score came to the Ultra 2 as well, so the real gains are satellite, 5G, and six extra hours of battery.
Buyers who want the health features alone should look at the Series 11, which has the same chip and the same health list for less money.
Small wrists should look at the Series or SE. The Ultra comes in one size and it is a large one.
One caveat on the health side: hypertension notifications are not intended for people under 22, anyone already diagnosed with hypertension, or people who are pregnant. If that feature is the reason you are buying, check that you are in scope first.
