About Galaxy Watch Ultra
Galaxy Watch Ultra is the rugged end of Samsung's smartwatch range, sitting above the ordinary Galaxy Watch on price, case size, battery and durability rating. It arrived in 2024 as Samsung's answer to the Apple Watch Ultra, and the second generation, the Galaxy Watch Ultra2, launched in July 2026 at 699.99 US dollars. Where a Galaxy Watch is a watch you wear to work, this is a watch built to survive a long day outdoors: a titanium cushion case, a 10ATM and IP69K rating, dual band GPS, and a battery Samsung rates at up to 60 hours with the always on display running. It is sold in one case size only, 47mm, which is the single biggest thing to know before ordering one.

What the Ultra gets that the standard Galaxy Watch does not
Four things, and they are all physical rather than software.
The case is titanium in a cushion shape, rather than the round aluminium case of the standard watch. The current model is 12 percent thinner than the first generation, which brings it to 10.7mm.
The display goes brighter. Samsung rates the Ultra2 panel at up to 5,000 nits, the brightest it has put on a Galaxy Watch, and it measures 1.52 inches.
The battery is far larger: 800mAh on the Ultra2, which Samsung describes as 35 percent up on the previous generation. Fast charging reaches about 40 percent in 30 minutes.
The environmental ratings are the real separation. 10ATM, IP69K, MIL-STD-810H, and EN13319 certification as a diving instrument to 40 metres. A standard Galaxy Watch is water resistant. This one is rated for diving.
How long the battery actually lasts
Samsung's figure is up to 60 hours with the always on display enabled. That is a rated figure under Samsung's own conditions, and it is worth setting against what testers found.
Trusted Reviews measured about two days of real use with the features turned on, and called battery life limited even after the 35 percent capacity increase. They also timed a full charge at around an hour and a half, which is slow for a watch of this class.
So the honest expectation is two days between charges with everything running, stretching further if you turn the always on display off and are not tracking long GPS sessions. That is better than the standard Galaxy Watch and behind what a dedicated outdoor watch from Garmin will do.
How good is the tracking
This is where the Ultra earns the price difference. It carries dual band GPS on L1 and L5, which is the feature that keeps a track honest in cities and under tree cover.
Trusted Reviews tested it on difficult London routes and reported that the trace held to the actual path rather than drifting, and rated it above the Pixel Watch 4 on that measure.
The Ultra2 generation added a Trail Run mode with elevation tracking and extended the diving support to 40 metres. Health sensing is the BioActive sensor shared with the rest of the range: heart rate, blood oxygen, respiratory rate, and sleep tracking, which reviewers rate as one of Samsung's stronger areas.
The catch that is easy to miss
Several of the health features that make the watch worth buying are locked to Samsung phones. Trusted Reviews found that ECG and sleep apnoea detection only work when the watch is paired with a Samsung handset, not with Android generally.
That is a real constraint, not a technicality. If you use a Pixel or another Android phone, you are buying the hardware and losing part of the point of it.
Reviewers also found Samsung Health's AI generated insights generic compared with what Fitbit produces, so the value here is in the raw sensor and GPS quality rather than the coaching layer on top.
What to weigh it against
Against the standard Galaxy Watch, the Ultra costs substantially more and buys durability rating, battery and brightness. If you are not diving, trail running or spending long days outside, the standard model does the same job on your wrist.
Against the Apple Watch Ultra, the comparison only matters if you have not already chosen a phone, because neither pairs with the other side. Samsung's watch is the one to look at if your phone is Android and preferably a Galaxy.
Against Garmin, the trade is clear. Garmin wins on battery life by a wide margin and on depth of training analysis. Samsung wins on the display, on general smartwatch functions such as apps and payments, and on integration with a Galaxy phone.
Who should buy something else
If you do not own a Samsung phone, think hard. ECG and sleep apnoea detection will not work for you, and those are two of the headline health features.
If you have small wrists, this watch is sold only at 47mm and it is a cushion case. There is no smaller option in the line. The standard Galaxy Watch comes in smaller sizes and is the answer here.
If multi day battery life is the requirement, buy a Garmin. Two days of real use is not what the outdoor watch market means by endurance.
If you want the ruggedness but not the price, the previous generation Galaxy Watch Ultra is still a titanium 10ATM watch and sells for less, and the practical gaps are brightness, thickness and the newer sport modes.
If you mainly want notifications, payments and step counting, none of the reasons this watch exists apply to you, and a standard Galaxy Watch will cost far less.
