About Azure Managed Grafana
Azure Managed Grafana is Microsoft's fully managed Grafana service for teams that want dedicated dashboards, alerting, reporting, and telemetry visualization without operating Grafana servers themselves. It brings metrics, logs, traces, and other supported data sources into Grafana while Microsoft manages the underlying Azure infrastructure, updates, and service operations. The strongest fit is for observability teams that want the full Grafana workspace experience, broader data-source support, and Azure identity and networking integration beyond the Grafana dashboards built directly into Azure Monitor.

What is Azure Managed Grafana used for?
Azure Managed Grafana is used to build shared dashboards and visualizations across application and infrastructure telemetry. Microsoft documents built-in integration with Azure Monitor and Azure Data Explorer, and Standard workspaces can use the wider set of core Grafana data-source plugins. This makes the service useful when a team needs one Grafana workspace for Azure metrics, logs, Prometheus data, Azure Data Explorer, and selected non-Azure sources.
The service is especially useful when an organization already prefers Grafana dashboards but does not want to patch, scale, secure, and upgrade a self-hosted Grafana deployment. Microsoft manages the hosting layer, while the customer still designs dashboards, controls access, chooses data sources, and decides how alerts and reports should be used.
Which Azure Managed Grafana tier should buyers choose?
Microsoft currently recommends the Standard tier for new workspaces. Essential is deprecated, cannot be selected for new workspaces, has no SLA, and is scheduled for complete retirement on March 31, 2027. Existing Essential users should plan a migration rather than treating that tier as a long-term option.
Standard currently has X1 and X2 instance sizes. X1 is the default. X2 provides more memory and supports up to 1,000 alert rules per instance compared with 500 for X1. Microsoft also notes that a Standard workspace can be increased from a smaller to a larger instance size, but downgrading from a larger size is not supported. Grafana Enterprise is an optional add-on within Standard, not a separate Azure tier.
How does Azure Managed Grafana pricing work?
Pricing was checked on August 27, 2026. Microsoft currently describes Azure Managed Grafana pricing as a combination of active-user charges and, for Standard workspaces, hosting infrastructure charges. Standard X1 uses two Standard Units and X2 uses four Standard Units. Optional zone redundancy adds Zone Redundancy Units. Grafana Enterprise licensing, when enabled, has its own licensing cost.
Microsoft's pricing pages expose the actual currency amounts according to billing region, agreement, and account context, so BrandLigo does not present one universal monthly price. Buyers should estimate active users, Standard instance size, zone redundancy, and any Enterprise licensing together. A workspace that looks inexpensive at low usage can become materially different in cost when many active users, X2 capacity, zone redundancy, or Enterprise plugins are required.
How does Azure Managed Grafana integrate with Azure Monitor and identity?
Azure Managed Grafana integrates closely with Azure Monitor and Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft Entra identities are used for user access, and managed identities can be used when the Grafana workspace needs to query supported Azure data sources. The portal creation flow can assign the workspace identity a Monitoring Reader role so it can read monitoring data across the selected subscription.
This is different from Azure Monitor dashboards with Grafana. Azure Monitor includes Grafana dashboards directly inside the Azure portal at no additional Grafana workspace cost and with less setup. Azure Managed Grafana is the better fit when teams need a dedicated Grafana experience, a wider selection of data sources, advanced alerting, reports, customization, or Grafana features that are not available in the embedded Azure Monitor dashboard experience.
What reliability and private-networking options are available?
Standard supports private endpoints, deterministic outbound IPs, alerting, email through SMTP, reporting, image rendering, and optional zone redundancy. Microsoft recommends enabling zone redundancy for production deployments when the region supports it. When enabled, the Grafana servers and supporting components are spread across availability zones and Microsoft manages failover behavior.
Zone redundancy must be selected as part of the workspace design. Microsoft states that it cannot simply be enabled or disabled on an existing workspace; teams must create a workspace with the desired configuration and migrate their dashboards and settings. For stronger recovery planning, Microsoft also recommends keeping dashboards and related Grafana resources as code so they can be redeployed to another workspace or region if needed.
What current limits should teams plan around?
Standard X1 currently supports up to 500 alert rules per instance, while X2 supports up to 1,000. Standard supports unlimited dashboards and data sources according to the current Azure Managed Grafana quota table, but API keys are limited to 100 per instance. Microsoft currently limits workspaces to 50 instances per Azure region per subscription, 90 requests per second per IP, and 45 requests per second per HTTP host.
Data-source responses are also constrained. Microsoft lists an 80 MB data-source query-size limit and a 200-second data-query timeout. Report or image-rendering requests have a 220-second service limit, and annotation history is automatically trimmed according to age and count limits. Teams should also remember that each connected data source has its own quotas, so a Grafana dashboard can still be constrained by Azure Monitor, Azure Data Explorer, Prometheus, or another source even when the Grafana workspace itself has capacity.
What limitations differ from self-hosted Grafana?
Azure Managed Grafana intentionally restricts some Grafana administration capabilities because Microsoft operates the managed service. Customers cannot freely install, remove, or upgrade plugins from the Grafana catalog. Grafana Server Admin is not available to customers, and some Grafana administrative APIs that require that role are unavailable. Microsoft also states that Grafana's own RBAC feature is not currently supported in Azure Managed Grafana.
All users must have Microsoft Entra accounts. External collaborators can be added as guests, but third-party account systems are not used directly. A workspace can use only one managed identity, either system-assigned or user-assigned. These constraints reduce administration work, but they also mean organizations that depend on unusual plugins, deep server administration, or custom Grafana internals may prefer a self-managed Grafana deployment.
Who should choose something else?
Choose Azure Monitor dashboards with Grafana instead if the team mainly visualizes Azure Monitor data and wants dashboards inside the Azure portal with minimal setup and no dedicated Grafana workspace. Choose self-hosted Grafana if the organization needs full plugin control, server-level administration, custom authentication behavior, or deployment choices that Azure Managed Grafana does not expose.
A different observability platform can also make more sense if the organization has standardized on another vendor for metrics, logs, traces, incident management, and dashboards. Azure Managed Grafana is strongest when Grafana itself is an important part of the monitoring workflow and the team values Microsoft-managed operations and Azure integration more than complete control of the Grafana server.
