Apple TV 4K is Apple's set-top streaming box. It connects to a television over HDMI, runs tvOS, and sits at the point where Apple's video, audio and home accessories meet. The hardware on sale today is the third generation, introduced in October 2022 and built around the A15 Bionic chip. The line ships in two configurations rather than one, and the gap between them is less about storage than about what the box is allowed to do inside a smart home. Little has changed since 2022 apart from the price, which Apple has since raised on both versions.

Where the Apple TV 4K sits in Apple's home range

Within the Apple TV and Home brand this is the only general purpose computer. A HomePod plays audio and answers Siri. The Apple TV 4K draws an interface on a screen, runs third party apps, plays games, and shows compatible camera feeds in a window. Apple expects it to be powered on and connected at all times, which is why it doubles as the hub the rest of the household accessories talk to.

Most buyers arrive looking for a streaming box and leave having bought the home hub as well. That second job is the reason the choice of configuration matters more than it first appears.

The two configurations, and which one to pick

Apple sells the 64GB Wi-Fi model at 199 US dollars and the 128GB model with Gigabit Ethernet at 249 US dollars. The extra storage is the least interesting part of the difference. Apps and games are small, and video is streamed rather than kept, so 64GB is enough for most households.

Two things do separate them. The dearer box has a wired Gigabit Ethernet socket, which is worth having if your wireless network is busy or your router is far from the television. It also has a Thread radio, and the cheaper one does not. Thread is the low power mesh that many Matter accessories use, so if you plan to run lights, locks or sensors through Apple Home, the 50 dollar step up buys the radio those accessories need. If the box will only ever play video, save the money.

Formats and connections shared by both models

Both configurations output up to 2160p at 60 frames per second over HDMI 2.1, and both handle Dolby Vision Profile 5 along with HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. On the audio side they support Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround and Dolby Atmos, and they can pass spatial audio through to AirPods or a HomePod pair. An Enhance Dialogue setting lifts speech out of a busy mix.

Wireless is Wi-Fi 6 with 2x2 MIMO plus Bluetooth 5.0 on both. Each ships with the Siri Remote that charges over USB-C, and each measures 93mm square and 31mm tall. Neither has a USB port or a card slot.

Who it is for

This box makes most sense in a household that already keeps its photos, music, purchases and passwords inside an Apple account. AirPlay from a phone works without setup, an Apple Music library appears already signed in, and AirPods pair to the box the way they pair to everything else. Voice search is the part reviewers consistently rate above rivals, because it copes with a request phrased as a sentence rather than a title.

It also suits anyone who resents advertising on a home screen. Reviewers single out the interface for having folders and no promoted tiles, which is not true of the cheaper boxes.

What to weigh against a Roku Ultra or an Nvidia Shield

The Roku Ultra costs less, carries more apps than anything else on the market, and adds USB and microSD for local files. Tom's Guide put it ahead of the Apple TV 4K in a three way test, scoring it 88 against 80 for Apple and 76 for the Nvidia Shield. The Shield remains the pick for game streaming through GeForce Now and has the ports the Apple box lacks.

Set against that, the Apple TV 4K has the calmer interface, the better search, and the only one of the three that acts as a hub for Apple Home. The honest summary is that Apple charges a premium for polish and for fitting into hardware you already own, not for a longer feature list.

Who should buy something else

If nobody in the house owns an iPhone or an iPad, most of what you are paying for goes unused, and a Roku or a Fire TV device does the streaming for a fraction of the price. If your television already runs Google TV or Roku competently and the apps you watch are all present, a second box adds a remote rather than a capability.

Skip it too if you keep a library of video files on a drive or a NAS and want to plug that drive straight in, because there is no port to plug it into. And if the only services you use are one or two of the large subscription apps, the cheapest stick on the shelf will play them at the same resolution.

What buying one in 2026 involves

The hardware is coming up on four years old, and its price has gone the wrong way: the 64GB model launched at 129 US dollars and now sells for 199, and the Ethernet model launched at 149 and now sells for 249. That is unusual for a device this far into its life.

MacRumors reports that a refresh is expected during 2026 with a newer chip and reworked voice control. Apple has published nothing about it, so treat that as reporting rather than fact. The practical consequence is the same either way. If you need a box this week, the current one is capable and will keep receiving tvOS updates. If you can wait a few months, waiting costs nothing.
