This is the part of ZTE most people have used without noticing. Portable hotspots, fixed wireless units and routers, supplied largely by mobile operators and frequently carrying the operator's name rather than the manufacturer's.

It is a category that gets almost no attention and does a great deal of work: connecting a site office before the line is installed, covering a home where fibre has not arrived, keeping a team online at an event, replacing a slow copper connection with something considerably faster.

It also sits closest to what the company actually is. ZTE's principal business is building network equipment for carriers, and this hardware is the consumer-facing edge of that rather than a separate consumer venture.

How does this range differ from ZTE Phones?

It is the stronger of the two, and for a structural reason rather than a marketing one.

Phones are decided by camera processing and software support, and both follow enormous sustained investment by a handful of very large companies. A manufacturer competing there on price is always working against that.

Connectivity hardware is decided by radio engineering, by how many devices a unit holds under real conditions, and by whether it runs for years without attention. That is close to what the company does for carriers as its main business, and it is a market where the customer is often the operator rather than the individual, which suits a manufacturer with exactly this shape.

The practical version for a reader: a strong record in this category should not be read as evidence about the phones, and the two ranges are worth judging entirely separately.

Portable or fixed?

Decide by whether the connection moves, and resist the temptation to buy one device for both jobs.

A portable hotspot carries its own battery and is built for a bag, a vehicle or a stall. It exists for the situations phone tethering handles badly: several people sharing, a laptop that must stay connected all day, and keeping work traffic on its own plan rather than on a personal phone bill.

A fixed wireless unit or router is mains powered with better antennas and no battery to degrade, and it will outperform a portable unit used in the same place. It is the right answer for a home or an office where fibre has not arrived or has not arrived yet.

Using a portable unit as a permanent one is the common mistake and gets the worst of both: a degrading battery, weaker antennas and worse sustained performance, in exchange for portability nobody is using.

For either, the two questions that decide satisfaction are the supported bands against the network you will actually use, and whether the unit is locked to an operator.

Who is better served elsewhere?

Anyone who can get fibre at a comparable price. Take the fibre. It is more consistent, better under load at busy times, and better for anything latency-sensitive. Fixed wireless is an excellent answer to not having that option rather than a better option than having it.

Anyone connecting a single laptop occasionally. Phone tethering is free and already in your pocket, and buying hardware plus a second data plan to replace it is money spent on a problem you do not have.

Anyone with weak mobile coverage at the address. No device manufactures a signal. If a phone struggles indoors there, this hardware will too, and the conversation to have is about external antennas or a different technology.

Anyone needing a guaranteed level of service for business-critical work. Shared mobile capacity is not the foundation for something that must not vary, unless there is a contract that says otherwise in writing.

Who is well served: somebody who needs connectivity where a fixed line is slow, absent or not worth installing, and who checks the bands and the carrier locking before buying rather than after.
