About Google Pixel

Google makes Pixel phones. It has designed and sold them itself since the first Pixel in October 2016, and since Pixel 6 they've run Google's own Tensor chip.

Pixel is Google's own hardware brand. Today it covers the Pixel 11 phones and the Pixel 10a, plus Pixel Watch, Pixel Buds, Pixel Tablet and the new Pixel Tag finder. You can buy them on the Google Store and through retail partners.

Where it stops: thermostats, cameras and doorbells sit under Google Nest, and health trackers sit under Fitbit.

Who makes Pixel phones?

Google does. When it launched the first Pixel, Google called it "the first phone made by Google inside and out," with hardware and software design brought together under one roof. Google's earlier phones had come out of partnerships, including HTC's Nexus One.

HTC stayed part of the story. In September 2017 Google agreed to bring a team of HTC engineers into its hardware group, people Google said it had already been working with closely on Pixel. HTC put the deal at US$1.1 billion in cash, and Google said it closed in January 2018.

When did the first Pixel come out?

Google announced the first Pixel on 4 October 2016. It came in two sizes, 5 inches and 5.5 inches, and Google billed it as the first phone with the Google Assistant built in.

The range has grown a lot since. Pixel 6, in October 2021, brought Google Tensor, which Google called its first-ever processor. Pixel Watch followed in October 2022.

The newest phones were announced on 12 August 2026: Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. The first three hit shelves on 20 August, running Google's Tensor G6 chip.

What does the Pixel range cover today?

Going by the US Google Store, five things.

Phones: Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Pixel 10a. Watches: Pixel Watch 5, with Pixel Watch 4 still listed. Earbuds: Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a.

Then there's Pixel Tablet, which pairs with a charging speaker dock and doubles as a home controller. It sits under Smart Home on the Store.

The newest addition is Pixel Tag, Google's first finder tag, which uses Google's Find Hub network to locate your stuff.

How is Pixel different from other Android phones?

By Google's own account, three things stand out.

Updates. Google says its latest phones get seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates. Its support page applies seven years of OS and security updates to every Pixel from Pixel 8 onward.

Android lands here first. Google said Android 17 was "rolling out first to Pixel" on 16 June 2026, with other eligible Android phones following through the year.

The chip. Pixels run Tensor, which Google describes as its custom-designed mobile processor. For Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10, Google said it used TSMC's 3nm process.

Those are Google's claims. Other Android makers set their own update policies, so compare model by model.

How does Pixel sit next to Fitbit, Nest and Android?

Pixel is Google's hardware for the stuff you carry around. Its sibling brands split up the rest.

Android is the operating system Pixel runs, and you'll find it on phones from plenty of other makers too. Fitbit is Google's health tracker brand: Pixel Watch takes its health tracking from Fitbit, and both report into the Google Health app. Google Nest covers thermostats, cameras, doorbells and Nest Hub displays. Gemini is the AI layer, and Google says the Pixel 11 phones were designed for Gemini Intelligence.

So if you want a simple fitness band rather than a smartwatch, you'll end up at Fitbit, not Pixel.

Who is Pixel for?

Pixel suits you if you want Android the way Google ships it: new versions first, a long update window and Google's AI features built in.

It's also the natural pick if you want Pixel Watch. Google lists Pixel Watch 5 as working with Android 12 or newer, and it doesn't list iPhone.

It's a weaker fit if you live on iPhone. Fitbit trackers work with both iPhone and Android, so an iPhone owner who wants Google's health tracking is better served there. And if you want a tracker with no screen at all, Fitbit Air is the one to look at.

What to check before buying a Pixel

Check the update window, not just the headline. Google counts the seven years from when each phone first went on sale on the US Google Store, so an older model on discount has fewer years left.

Buying for a business? Line that window up with your refresh cycle, so no phone drops out of security updates before you replace it.

Check your local Google Store for which models, colors and storage sizes are sold where you live. And if you're buying a SIM-free phone, confirm your carrier supports that exact model before you order.
