# Projector Screen Size Guide 2026: Distance, Math and Charts

**Updated 21 July 2026.** There is a right screen size for your room, and it is a calculation rather than a guess. Get it wrong in one direction and the image feels small and underwhelming; wrong in the other and you are turning your head to follow the action, which is exhausting within twenty minutes.

This guide gives you the exact maths the professionals use, worked examples at real seating distances, and a chart you can read off directly. No trigonometry required on your part — the formulas are already solved below.

## The one number that decides everything

Screen size is not chosen in isolation. It is chosen relative to **how far you sit from the screen**. The same 120-inch image is spectacular in one room and unwatchable in another purely because of seating distance.

The industry measures this as **viewing angle** — how much of your horizontal field of view the screen fills. Two standards define the targets, and both come from bodies that set professional cinema specifications.

## SMPTE vs THX: the two standards

**SMPTE** (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends a **30-degree** viewing angle. This is the comfortable, relaxed target — well suited to sport, gaming, general TV, and mixed-use rooms where not everyone sits dead centre.

**THX** recommends a wider **36 to 40-degree** viewing angle for a more immersive, cinema-like experience. This is the “wow” target for dedicated movie rooms, matching the back row of a commercial THX-certified cinema.

Neither is more correct. SMPTE prioritises comfort, THX prioritises immersion. Which you want depends on the room and what you watch in it.

## The formulas, already solved

To find your ideal screen diagonal, take your seating distance in inches and multiply:

**Worked example.** You sit 10 feet from the screen, which is 120 inches.

- SMPTE (comfortable): 120 × 0.625 = **75-inch** diagonal
- THX (immersive): 120 × 0.84 = **101-inch** diagonal

So at ten feet, anything from about 75 to 100 inches is defensible. Below 75 feels small; above 100 starts demanding head movement. Most people are happiest around the middle — a 100-inch screen at ten feet is the single most common sweet spot, landing just inside the THX immersive target.

## Screen size by seating distance

Read straight off the row that matches where you sit.

The range between the two columns is your comfortable band. Pick toward SMPTE for a family room with wide seating, toward THX for a dedicated cinema where everyone faces the screen.

## From diagonal to actual dimensions

Screens are sold by diagonal, but rooms are constrained by width and height. For a 16:9 screen:

- **Width** = diagonal × 0.872
- **Height** = diagonal × 0.49

So a 100-inch 16:9 screen is 87 inches wide and 49 inches tall. Add frame allowance, and check it physically fits the wall before ordering — this is the step people skip and regret.

## How resolution changes the answer

Viewing angle sets the comfortable size. Resolution sets how close you can sit before the image breaks down into visible pixels.

**1080p** looks clean at SMPTE 30-degree distances and further. Sit closer than that and, on a large screen, you start seeing structure. This is why a 1080p projector pairs naturally with the comfortable rather than the immersive target.

**4K** holds up at THX distances and closer. The extra pixels are precisely what let you sit near a large screen without pixelation, which is why 4K becomes worthwhile above roughly 80 inches at immersive distances. The practical implication: if you are targeting a big screen at a close, immersive distance, buy 4K. If you sit further back at a comfortable distance, 1080p resolves everything you can see anyway.

## Getting the height right

Size is not the only dimension that matters. Screen **height and position** affect comfort just as much.

The ideal is for your eyeline to fall at roughly the vertical centre of the screen, or a little below it. The centre of the image should sit around eye level when seated — commonly with the bottom edge about 24 to 36 inches off the floor for a typical setup, though this depends on your seating height and screen size.

Mounting a screen too high is one of the most common home-theatre mistakes. It forces you to tilt your head back for the whole film, which causes neck strain. When in doubt, lower.

## Matching the projector to the size

Your chosen screen size determines how far the projector must sit from it, via the throw ratio:

**Throw distance = throw ratio × screen width**

A standard-throw projector with a 1.5:1 ratio filling a 100-inch screen (87 inches wide) needs about 130 inches, or just under 11 feet, of distance. ## Frequently asked questions

**What size projector screen do I need for my room?** Multiply your seating distance in inches by 0.625 for a comfortable SMPTE size, or by 0.84 for an immersive THX size. At ten feet (120 inches) that gives roughly 75 to 100 inches, and most people are happiest around 100 inches at that distance.
