HDMI 2.1 goes to 48Gbps. See the problem?

A projector with HDMI 2.0 ports will happily accept 4K 120Hz from a PS5. It just can’t show it. So it downscales to 1080p or 1440p and keeps the frame rate. Nothing on screen tells you. You bought 4K and you’re watching 1080p.

There’s a second version of this trap, and it’s sneakier. Some projectors have genuine HDMI 2.1 ports but a DLP chip that can’t switch fast enough. They take the signal, then display 4K at 60Hz by dropping alternate frames. The spec sheet says “4K 120Hz input support” — technically true, practically useless.

How to check before you buy: look for “4K 120Hz” describing the output or the panel. Not the input. If a manufacturer only ever says “supports 4K 120Hz input,” assume it downscales.

And get a certified 48Gbps Ultra High Speed cable. A cable rated for HDMI 2.0 will bottleneck a perfectly good projector, and this is the single most common reason a setup silently drops to 60Hz.

→ Certified 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 cables on Amazon

What actually matters

Input lag

The delay between pressing a button and seeing it happen. This is the spec that separates a gaming projector from a cinema projector with an HDMI port.

Under 20ms — competitive play. Shooters, fighting games, racing.

20–40ms — fine for most fast action titles.

40–50ms — OK for strategy, sim, slower adventure games.

Over 50ms — don’t game on it.

One catch worth knowing: quoted figures are almost always measured in game mode at the projector’s fastest resolution and refresh combo. A projector advertising 4ms is usually quoting 1080p at 240Hz. That same unit at 4K 60Hz might be 16ms. Both numbers are honest. Only one makes the box.

240Hz at 1080p, or 120Hz at 4K?

These are different products for different players. Getting this wrong is the most common mistake people make.

Competitive PC players want 240Hz at 1080p. At that level frame rate beats resolution and nobody’s admiring texture work mid-fight.

Console players on PS5 or Series X want 4K at 120Hz with VRR, because that’s what those machines actually output.

Very few projectors do both properly. Work out which player you are before you shop.

VRR and ALLM

Two HDMI 2.1 features worth understanding.

ALLM spots a console signal and kills frame interpolation automatically — low latency without remembering to flip a setting.

VRR syncs the projector’s refresh to the console’s actual frame rate, which stops tearing when the frame rate wobbles.

Both matter more on a 120-inch image than on a monitor. Tearing scales with screen size.

Contrast beats brightness here

Counterintuitive, but true.

Brightness gets all the marketing. What actually loses you fights is bad contrast, which crushes dark greys together until an opponent standing in shadow is simply invisible.

Dark room? 1,500–2,000 ANSI is plenty — spend the rest on contrast. Ambient light? 2,500–3,000 ANSI is your floor.

DLP has a structural edge for gaming too: micromirror response is effectively sub-millisecond, so motion blur and ghosting barely register.

The 6 best gaming projectors

1. Optical zoom and lens shift let you place it off-centre and correct optically — digital keystone crops the image to square it, so you lose resolution you paid for. Stick a standard projector behind your seating and anyone who stands up throws a shadow across the screen. A short throw unit sits near the wall and that problem disappears.

4ms at 1080p 240Hz is about as fast as projection gets.

BenQ also ships FPS, RPG and SPG game modes that tune latency, colour and audio per genre. More useful than it sounds — FPS mode lifts shadow detail so dark corners become readable.

The honest limitation: 95% Rec.709 is decent but narrower than the triple-laser models here. Switch it back off for films — you want that processing there.

Kill motion smoothing explicitly. Some projectors leave it partly active even in game mode, hiding under names like MEMC or MotionFlow.

Use certified 48Gbps cables. Cheap cables are the number one reason a 4K 120Hz setup quietly falls back to 60Hz.

Match brightness to the room. Max output in a dark room crushes shadow detail and hides enemies. Turn it down and you’ll see more.

Set sharpness to zero. Factory sharpness adds edge enhancement that looks like artefacting on game textures.

One more thing: sound. Projector fans sit in the room with you and no built-in speaker beats that. Even a modest soundbar does more for immersion than any spec upgrade at the same money.

→ Soundbars on Amazon

Still weighing up the format? For competitive short-throw setups the BenQ TK710STi is faster still at 4ms.

Do I really need HDMI 2.1? If you game on PS5, Xbox Series X, or a high-end PC and want 4K at 120Hz with VRR, yes. HDMI 2.0 caps at 18Gbps, which is not enough bandwidth. A projector with HDMI 2.0 will accept the signal and downscale it without telling you.

How much input lag is acceptable? Under 20ms for competitive play, 20 to 40ms for most fast action games, up to 50ms for strategy and simulation. Beyond 50ms, gaming becomes noticeably unresponsive.

Is 240Hz at 1080p better than 120Hz at 4K? It depends entirely on what you play. Competitive PC shooters favour 240Hz at 1080p, where frame rate beats resolution. Console gaming favours 4K 120Hz, since that is what the machines output. Few projectors do both well.

Are laser projectors better than lamp projectors for gaming? Yes, for practical reasons: instant on and off with no warm-up, no lamp to replace, and stable brightness across 20,000 hours or more. Lamp models also dim gradually, which is easy to miss until dark scenes become unreadable.

Will a projector hurt my competitive performance? A slow one will. A projector under 20ms input lag with game mode enabled is comparable to a mid-range gaming monitor, and the extra screen size can help with peripheral awareness. The larger risk is poor contrast hiding opponents in shadow.

Do I need a special screen for gaming? In a dark room, a basic matte screen is fine. In a lit room, or with any ultra short throw model, an ambient light rejecting screen is close to essential — it preserves the contrast that makes dark areas readable.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[
{"@type":"Question","name":"What is the best projector for gaming in 2026?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The XGIMI HORIZON 20 at $1,699 for most players, with 1ms input lag, 240Hz, VRR and ALLM, RGB triple laser and optical zoom.
