As of 5 May, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skype.com\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Skype\u2019s<\/a> free services will officially shut down, leaving only its business version in use. Weng had moved from Macau to Wales in 2012 for a short internship and met Owen through the National Trust. Eventually, the two got engaged, and Weng relocated to Wales in 2015. Now 99 years old, Vera has been part of Susan\u2019s daily life thanks to the app\u2014whether they were sharing Christmas memories or admiring each other\u2019s gardens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2159\" data-end=\"2394\">Even after other platforms like WhatsApp came along, Skype remained their go-to for starting their conversations. \u201cLosing Skype will be a big blow,\u201d Susan said, expressing sadness about returning to costly international calls or email.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2399\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2401\" data-end=\"2443\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Business_Tool_Thats_Hard_to_Replace\"><\/span>A Business Tool That\u2019s Hard to Replace<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2445\" data-end=\"2673\">Stan Calderwood relied on Skype for affordable international calls, especially for work matters like speaking with estate agents and lawyers in Canada. On the day Skype\u2019s shutdown was announced, he\u2019d already used it eight times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2675\" data-end=\"2836\">&#8220;You can\u2019t always use WhatsApp or Zoom\u2014sometimes you need to call landlines,&#8221; he explained. Now, he\u2019s searching for another reliable, cost-effective alternative.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2838\" data-end=\"2841\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2843\" data-end=\"2875\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_Next_for_Skype_Users\"><\/span>What\u2019s Next for Skype Users?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2877\" data-end=\"3090\">Despite a drop in users, Skype still had nearly 28 million active accounts as of March last year. Microsoft recommends users transition to Teams, where they can access similar features and export their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandligo.com\/blog\/skype-to-shut-down-in-may-2025\/\">Skype<\/a> data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3092\" data-end=\"3352\">For those with active App credits or subscriptions, Teams will allow continued calling until those services expire.
